Description

First State Woodturners will be going to the Nemours Estate in Wilmington, Delaware for our Field Trip this year.  We will meet there at 10 AM on Saturday, July 13th to tour the Estate.  If you’re an FSW member, we will pay a portion of your admission fee to the Estate.

The Nemours admission fee is normally $23 per person ($21 for seniors), however FSW is subsidizing admission for members.  Purchase tickets here for $15 and we will pay the balance.  (If you have an FSW Family Membership, we will subsidize two (2) admissions.)

The Nemours Estate is a 47,000-square-foot mansion constructed in 1910 by notable architects Carrère and Hastings.  The mansion features 77 rooms of remarkable collections that include art, furniture, and period technology.  Of particular interest to woodturners are the elegant moldings and turned furniture pieces throughout the mansion.

In addition to the mansion, the grounds include the Chauffer’s Garage, which contains a collection of vintage automobiles owned by the duPonts.  The Garage was built in 1914 to house rare automobiles from Rolls-Royces to Cadillacs.

To round out the visit, the grounds also include 200 acres of stunning French-inspired formal gardens, grounds, and woodlands.  The gardens were modeled after those at the Palace of Versailles — complete with fountains, mazes, towers, monuments, nature trails, and more.
