Description
This is the recording of our February 2024 meeting. Tom Wirsing gave an excellent demo on turning a platter using his “Two-Step Turning Process”.
Using the two-step turning process, Tom removes 99% of the wood with gouges, getting the final shape just right. But before he sands, he scrapes the entire platter with negative-rake scrapers, fine-tuning delicate curves, crisping-up fine details, and removing every vestige of tear-out. Tom regards scraping as a necessary step before sanding. By careful scraping, he can significantly reduce sanding and improve the final results. Excessive sanding blunts details, distorts delicate curves, and ripples figured wood. Excessive sanding may get a turning smoother, but it will not make it better!
The Two-Step Turning Process can significantly improve your turnings. This demo includes a detailed handout explaining each step to turn a platter.
